Getting started
How do I add a game?
From Home, choose Import ROM, or use Add Game from your Library. Select a legally obtained .gba file using the Android file picker. The game will appear in your Library. You can also use Add Games Folder to grant access to a folder containing .gba files. Tap a game to open its game page, then choose Start Game.
Follow the game-import guide →What file formats are supported?
The current app imports Game Boy Advance game files with the .gba extension. ZIP, 7z, and other console formats are not supported by the current importer. Save import/export uses compatible .sav files. The separate patching tool accepts IPS, BPS, and UPS patches; those patch files are not standalone games.
Check supported file formats →Does GBA Play include games?
No. GBA Play does not include commercial ROMs or a proprietary Game Boy Advance BIOS, and does not offer ROM downloads. You must provide game files you are legally entitled to use. Game artwork and screenshots on this website are illustrative examples, not included games.
Saves & Timeline
How do saves work?
Current Progress is your in-game save. Save inside the game as you normally would. On the game page, choose Manage under Saves & History to open Saves, export a .sav file, or open Backups. Automatic backups are created when leaving a game if Auto Backup is enabled; you can also create a manual backup. Safety backups help preserve an existing save before import or restore. Snapshots and Timeline checkpoints capture emulator state separately. All of these are local, so keep exported copies of important saves.
Follow the save and backup guide →How do I import a .sav file?
Open the matching game page, choose Saves & History → Manage → Import Save, and select a compatible .sav file. Review the confirmation: any existing current save is backed up first. After import, choose Restart Now, or start the game normally later to use the imported progress. An old snapshot can contain older progress, so do not load one expecting it to use the newly imported save. Files from a different game, region, revision, or patch may be incompatible.
Resolve save import problems →What is Game Timeline?
Game Timeline keeps automatic gameplay checkpoints when enabled and lets you save a moment manually. Open a game’s Timeline, select an earlier checkpoint, and choose Go Back. During a live session, the app attempts to save the current moment first. From the game page there is no live moment to capture; existing Game Save data is backed up before restoration. Checkpoint interval and history limits are managed in Settings → Saves & Timeline. In the current app, completing a rewarded ad unlocks Timeline access for one hour; automatic checkpoints continue while access is locked. Timeline is stored on your device, not in the cloud.
Understand Game Timeline →Controls & game tools
How do control themes work?
The four styles are Neon Classic, Pixel Retro, Glass Clear, and Dark Metal Pro. Open Settings → Controls to find the theme picker. In the current app, applying a different theme requires completing the rewarded-ad flow shown by the picker. The selected theme stays active until changed; it is not a permanent unlock of every theme. Per-game settings can override the global theme. You can separately adjust D-Pad/analog controls, layout, size, and opacity.
Compare the control themes →How do I patch a game?
Choose Patch Game on Home, or Patch ROM from the Add Game sheet. Select a base .gba game from your Library or files, then choose an IPS, BPS, or UPS patch and an output name. Tap Apply Patch. A successful patched copy is added to your Library, preserving the original game. If you get a source mismatch, check the patch’s required game version and region. Only use files and patches you are legally entitled to use or modify.
Follow the patching guide →Does GBA Play support Bluetooth controllers?
Yes. Pair a compatible Bluetooth controller through Android settings, or connect a supported physical controller, then open GBA Play. Settings → Controls includes gamepad configuration and button remapping. D-Pad, analog input, and optional shortcuts such as Fast Forward, Quick Save, Quick Load, and Menu are supported. Compatibility depends on how Android recognizes your controller; test its mapping before a long session.

Why does GBA Play show ads?
Advertising helps support the app. Google AdMob provides ads, and the current app uses rewarded ads for actions such as changing control themes and unlocking Timeline access. Rewarded actions only complete after the ad reward is earned. Ads may be unavailable because of your connection, region, consent status, or ad availability. The Privacy Policy explains the data third-party ad services may process.
Read the Privacy Policy →How do I manage privacy choices?
When Google UMP makes it available, open Settings → Language & App → Privacy Options to review or change your choices. This option appears only when the SDK reports it is required. You can also manage the Advertising ID in Android settings where supported. The website has no advertising SDK, analytics script, or optional tracking-cookie banner.
How do I report a bug?
Prepare your device model, Android version, GBA Play version, the steps that reproduce the problem, and what you expected to happen. Note any patch, controller, or save import involved. Use Contact Support below to email our support team. Do not attach ROMs, BIOS files, private information, or copyrighted game artwork.
