Pair outside the app first

  1. Put your controller in pairing mode

Follow its manufacturer’s instructions. If it has several connection modes, choose the one intended for Android gamepad use.

  2. Open Android’s Bluetooth settings

Choose the option to pair a new device, select your controller, and complete the pairing prompts. Menu names vary between devices; Google’s Pixel Bluetooth instructions show one Android example.

  3. Confirm the connection, then open GBA Play

For a wired physical pad, connect it through a device-supported connection instead. Neither Bluetooth pairing nor a cable alone guarantees the app receives suitable gamepad input.

Check the app’s connection status

Open Settings → Controls and find the Controller section. Look for Connected: followed by a device name. If it shows No controller connected, check Android’s connection and the controller’s input mode before remapping.

The app relies on Android recognizing a gamepad or joystick. See Controller compatibility for the inputs handled and the limits of model-specific claims.

Assign and test the buttons

  1. Open Button Mapping

Start with the default layout. For an action you want to change, select Remap, then press the intended controller button at Press a controller button….

  2. Use distinct buttons for different actions

Review all mappings after changes. Assigning the same physical button to multiple actions can produce an unexpected match. Use Reset Controller Mapping to return to the default configuration if needed.

  3. Test during a safe moment

Check D-Pad directions, the left stick, A, B, L, R, Start, and Select. Then assign any optional Fast Forward, Quick Save, Quick Load, or Menu shortcuts. Optional actions are unassigned initially.

Remapping captures button presses. The left analog stick and hat-style D-Pad directions follow the app’s directional handling; this screen is not an arbitrary axis editor.

Choose whether touch controls stay visible

After confirming the pad works, you can enable Hide Touch Controls When Controller Connected in the Controller section. Leave touch controls visible while testing so you can still operate the game.

If buttons do not respond or map unexpectedly, follow the controller checks. Export a save before testing a Quick Load mapping that could replace your current moment.
